VoIP – Voice over Internet Protocol, changing the way we communicate

VoIP (voice over internet protocol) is a phone service in which calls are sent over the Internet instead of using a conventional public switched telephone or landline.  It is a phone call service that is used over the internet thru a broadband connection.  VoIP is an emerging technology.  This type of phone service can help businesses that make frequent long distance calls save a big amount of money.  Voice over internet protocol is also called IP telephony, internet telephony, broadband phone, broadband telephony and voice over broadband.

VoIP is the technology behind carrying voice as well as video calls over the Internet.  While it now plays a majority part of telecommunications, there are still lots of expectation in this space as VoIP evolves into the cellular world.  Many web conferencing packages make use of VoIP for voice communications.  VoIP is fast becoming more and more popular as it is a good alternative for voice communication.

People are switching to the use of VoIP services since it is usually cheaper than calls made thru local phone providers. VoIP is designed to cut down your call expenses thus; the monthly subscriptions are cheaper than your local phone service provider.  The key benefits of VoIP services include; low cost, the integration of data, voice and video on one system.  For the most part of using it, it is hard to notice any difference in the quality of service between VoIP and the use of conventional phone. But because it is transmitted over the internet, you may occasionally experience quality disruptions during the peak hours of internet usage.

VoIP services are becoming standard for communications around the globe, and have the potential to change the world’s phone systems.  Some of the popular VoIP service providers are Skype, Vonage, AT&T CallVantage and Lingo.
